Understanding the Role an Inverter Battery for Home Pays In Solar Power

Inverter Battery

Global warming is a keyword that even children understand. With its effects making themselves more visible and apparent with every changing season, the need for making sustainable choice has never been higher. As a result, solar power has seen a boost in residential use. By installing solar panels on the rooftop, homes can generate their own clean, green electricity. This electricity can be used I the same way as electricity from the main power grid. All you need is solar panels, an inverter and an inverter battery for home. Read on to know more about the inverter battery’s role and how to choose one for your system.

All Solar Power Systems do not Need a Battery:

The first thing to understand is that not all solar power systems require a battery. The battery is needed to hold a power reserve that can be distributed through the home at times when the solar panels cannot generate enough electricity. For example, solar panels don’t do much at night. At night, homes powered by solar energy get electricity from the battery.

But, this is not a requirement for all solar powered homes. Solar power systems can be set up as an On-Grid and Off-Grid Solar System. On-grid systems remain connected to the main power grid while off-grid systems are entirely independent. An on-grid system shares excess power generated during the day with the main grid and can take power from the main power grid at times when the panels are not able to generate sufficient electricity. Thus, a battery isn’t very important in such systems. However, with an off-grid system, a battery is a must-have.

How to Choose an Inverter Battery for Home ?

When you choose an inverter battery, you need to ensure that it meets your power needs. The price of an inverter battery increases with size. So, choosing a battery just on the basis of its pricetag and picking the cheapest may end up putting you in a frustrating situation where the battery discharges completely without meeting your power requirements. On the other hand, the most expensive battery may not be the right choice either. If the battery has a power capacity much higher than your needs, it will never be fully discharged. This may reduce the battery’s lifespan and affect its efficiency.

Instead, you need to choose a battery based on your power needs. First sum up the amount of power needed by each appliance. Then, multiply the sum by the number of hours you need backup for. Your ideal battery size is slightly higher than the result of this calculation. You may connect the inverter to multiple batteries if need be.

Maintaining a Battery

Inverter batteries should ideally have a lifespan of about 7-10 years. For the inverter to operate efficiently throughout its lifespan, it must be well maintained. This is quite easy to do. With a battery, keeping the distil water levels topped up is the most important aspect of maintenance. If you choose a tubular battery, your battery will require top-ups less frequently than flat plate batteries. The other things you will need to do is keep the terminals and outer surface clean and free from corrosion.

If you have an off-grid solar power system, choosing the right inverter battery for home is critical to the functioning of the system. As far as possible, always choose a battery from a well-known brand.
